General Motors Named EPA National Top 100 Green Power User

General Motors Arlington Assembly has earned a spot on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Top 100 List of the largest green power users. The plant’s No. 76 ranking in the Green Power Partnership recognizes GM’s efforts to power all its global facilities with 100 percent renewable energy by 2050.

The UPS Foundation Awards Tree Planting Grants to 19 Keep America Beautiful Affiliates Nationwide

Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s iconic community improvement nonprofit organization, today announced the distribution of 19 grants totaling $100,000 from The UPS Foundation for the 2018 Keep America Beautiful/UPS Community Tree and Recovery Tree Planting Grants program. The grant recipients’ projects will result in more than 1,200 trees being planted in support of local tree-planting initiatives.

California First Large State to Mandate 100 Percent Clean Power Grid

With the Governor’s signing of Senate Bill 100, California becomes the first large state to set a 100 percent clean electricity target. The new law requires California’s utilities to drive the state’s energy grid to 100 percent clean power by 2045.

Porterville Transit First Site for SCE’s Electric Bus Charging Pilot

Bus riders in Porterville, a city about 60 miles north of Bakersfield, will soon have one more reason to feel good about using public transportation: clean, smog-free electric buses. And thanks to a new pilot program being launched by Southern California Edison, Porterville Transit will receive financial assistance for bus charging stations, including free installation of electrical infrastructure, to support 10 new zero-emission buses the transit agency is adding to its fleet. The new battery electric buses are replacing older ones that run on fossil fuel.

The Arbor Day Foundation’s Texas Tree Recovery Campaign will hold a tree distribution event in Houston, TX on Saturday, October 13, 2018, for homeowners to replace trees lost in Hurricane Harvey.

The Future of Energy Is Decentralized

In every part of the world, from the industrialized to the emerging economies, energy systems are shifting from a highly centralized architecture (i.e., large generation plants, long transmission lines, and one-way flows of energy) to a decentralized, distributed network model. This model takes the form of microgrids (or “mini-grids” in Africa and Asia), small, integrated systems capable of autonomous operation; and as Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems and Virtual Power Plants, as ways of making the existing bulk power grid more flexible. Some compare this to the advent of “the internet of energy.”
