Gilead Awards $7.5 Million in Second Round of Grants to Advance HIV Cure Research

Gilead Sciences, Inc.(NASDAQ:GILD) announced the second round of recipients of its HIV cure grants program. This new commitment will provide $7.5 million to support five additional HIV cure research initiatives led by top academic institutions and focused on translational research and efficacy studies in preclinical models.

Today, more than 2 billion people in the world are overweight or obese and 800 million are malnourished. Malnutrition, in every form, presents significant threats to human health.

Children are particularly affected by malnutrition. In 2016, over 41 million under the age of 5 and over 340 million children and adolescents aged 5-19 were overweight or obese. During the last 3 decades the number of overweight children has doubled among 2 to 5 year old children.

This is a crisis in the making, requiring urgent action by stakeholders from all sectors.

Long Island Students Win Top Water Innovation Prize

Two childhood friends have won the top prize at the 2017 Stockholm Junior Water prize sponsored by Xylem. Ryan Thorpe and Rachel Chang, seniors at Manhasset Secondary School on Long Island, N.Y., have created a system that uses biosensors to detect individual colonies of four of the most common pathogenic bacteria found in water, paving the way for applications in regions where clean water is a luxury.
