Women of Color are Working Against the Odds

After earning her MBA from the University of Michigan, Pilar Cruz joined Cargill in 2002 instead of returning to a banking position in her native Colombia. She has risen through the management ranks at Cargill and held leadership positions for the company in Canada, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and England.

Meet Erin Schneider, Economic Development Director

We’re celebrating Women’s History Month this March by introducing you to 10 women who help power your life at Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas. They advance our company with their vision, talent, hard work and creativity. These trailblazing women – including a nuclear engineer, astrophysicist and lineman – reveal inspiring stories of persistence, pluck and achievement in largely male-dominated fields. A diverse workplace isn’t just a nice idea, it’s a competitive necessity. Today, meet Erin Schneider, a director of economic development based in Indiana.

Water Infrastructure Investments to Result in $220 Billion in Economic Growth

Closing the water infrastructure funding gap in the U.S. could result in a $220 billion boost in economic activity, as well as create 1.3 million jobs annually. Building the Next Generation of Leaders

The programme was launched in 2012 to ensure a consistent, high-quality approach to our global graduate recruitment and development. The three-year programme consolidated and replaced several existing schemes with varied approaches. It provides a breadth of potential

Harnessing Online Networks to Improve Patient Care

Our pharmacovigilance centre of excellence collects publically available data from social media and filters out unrelated information and anything that would infringe patient privacy. The Centre’s analysis is helping us to understand the benefits of our products, alert us to unexpected adverse effects, and evaluate the misuse of drugs.

Inclusive Business Maturity Toolkit: How Inclusive is Your Business?

Following on from the successful launch of Uncharted Waters, a report jointly published by Business Call to Action (BCtA), UNDP and Deloitte in October 2016, BCtA has now launched its Inclusive Business Maturity Toolkit. While the report examines how the private sector can move beyond philanthropy and corporate social responsibility to more meaningfully contribute to the SDGs, the toolkit takes this concept a step further by helping companies identify both how well they’re including people at the base of the economic pyramid (BoP) as employees, consumers and more, and how they can do it better.

A Graduated Approach to Intellectual Property

In 2016, we expanded our existing approach to filing and enforcing patents to ensure we balance the need to protect our intellectual property with a country’s economic maturity.

The Value of Smart City Initiatives Offer New Twist on Old Question of Affordability

Black & Veatch’s 2017 Strategic Directions: Smart City/Smart Utility Report reinforces lessons learned in the past year—although governments and municipalities believe strongly in the smart city model, they continue to struggle to fund these efforts. According to survey data, only 16 percent of municipalities can self-fund a smart city initiative, a little over a third cannot.
