Our daily decisions about what we eat impact our environment, and food is one area where we each have the power to effect change. As Aramark Executive Chef in Symantec’s Mountain View café, it’s my job to feed roughly 1,000 people each day. At Aramark, we believe the consumer sets the table, so menus are developed using proprietary research and consumer insights. Our research shows people today are more knowledgeable than ever, in issues relating to health and wellness, and ethical wellbeing, and therefore more demanding of companies, to align with their concerns. This extends to the humane treatment of animals, local purchasing, and responsible sourcing.

Americans drink a LOT of coffee — more than 400 million cups each day. Meanwhile, more and more people across the globe are drinking coffee as consumption grows in China, India, and beyond. This has led to the development of a vast commodity market worth $200 billion each year — one that will at least double by 2050, according to World Coffee Research. Welcome to SCRAP CULTURE, a new CEU where we explore sustainable design practices in a world consumed with waste. Today we live in a world that creates more waste than it does reduce, reuse or recycle. Designers in all disciplines are trying to address this through the exploration of new materials and production processes, creating a new design language and landscape that moves beyond industry or craft.

Mohawk Group's Sunweave woven carpet responds to current desires for artisanal materials in the built environment. Inspired by women weavers of indigenous cultures around the world, Sunweave evokes natural patterns found in baskets, blankets and textiles.
Sunweave features the innovative award-winning yarn system, Heathered Hues. This fiber’s natural texture and blending provides a variegated wool-like appearance. Sunweave is Red List-free and Living Product Challenge Petal Certified.
In addition to checking many design and performance boxes for designers, Sunweave also earns points toward green certifications. The collection is Red List free and designed to achieve the stringent requirements of the Living Product Challenge Petal Certification.
“The Sunweave collection is going to be the first petal certified living product in the broadloom and area rug category,” says Jackie Dettmar, VP of design and product development for Mohawk Group.
Sunweave also contributes to the sustainability of a community. “We were so excited to look at creating a living product out of the Eden, N.C. plant,” Dettmar explains. “We really want to contribute to sustaining that wonderful mill where we’ve got people who have worked there for 40 and almost 50 years."
