This time of year, our thoughts are often full of colorfully-wrapped gift bags or boxes with big bright bows. While the holiday season is a special time for giving, we are thankful as well for the opportunity to strengthen lives and communities all year long. Whether through mentoring students, teaching digital skills that lead to higher-paying jobs, or supporting entrepreneurs working to make a difference in their community, our employees and our thousands of nonprofit partners are improving lives every day.
Volunteering for a non-profit organization, donating your time and talents for a cause, is incredibly rewarding and makes you feel good. Volunteering also brings people together. Since its launch in 2015, Shire's Global Day of Service has brought thousands of employees together each year from many parts of the organization and all around the globe. This special day, which fosters camaraderie and teamwork and builds on Shire's longstanding tradition of giving back to communities where employees live and work, is a cornerstone of our Responsibility commitment and an integral component of our employee and community engagement program.
Through the 2017 Share the Love Event, from November 16, 2017, to January 2, 2018, Subaru will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased to the customer's choice of the four national charities, including Meals on Wheels America, with a minimum guarantee of $250,000. In addition to these partners, Subaru retailers have selected hundreds of hometown charities for their customers to support as well. By the end of this year, Subaru and its participating retailers will have donated over $115 million to help those in need.

On a brisk Saturday morning in November, volunteers and area organizations in Austin, Minnesota, were busy getting everything ready for an event to help others in the community. Tables were being set up, groceries were being placed into bags and barber chairs were being brought in for haircuts.
Richard Lemons, co-chair of the Austin Poverty Taskforce, the organization that coordinated the event, said he was humbled and overwhelmed as he entered the high school gym where Austin’s first Community Connect event would be taking place. “I was moved by how many people cared and were giving their time to help out,” he said.
