Hormel Foods Hunger Relief Efforts

At Hormel Foods, we’re inspired to help others. From cash and product donations to volunteer initiatives, we continually look for ways to do our part in making the world a better place.

We focus our philanthropic efforts on three areas: hunger, education and supporting the local communities where we operate. These areas closely align with our business initiatives, and over the years we’ve learned they are also the areas our employees are most passionate about.

We’re proud that 2016 was a record year for our giving: $10.9 million in cash and product donations. This includes $7.4 million in hunger donations and our donation of 2.7 million cans of SPAMMY® shelf-stable poultry product to help prevent childhood malnutrition in Guatemala.

Jennie-O Turkey Store Named Hunger Hero Award Winner by Second Harvest Heartland

Giving Food and Thanks
At a time of year when we all tend to think of others a little more often, Justin’s team members are continuing a nine-year partnership with Conscious Alliance to help bring food and friendship to their part of the country.

Waste Not, Want Not
It is not conservative to say that food waste is a huge issue. It affects each and every one of us, or will at some point in the near future. The rumblings of experts say that our current worldwide population will increase more than 35 percent by the year 2050.

Both the opportunity and need to reduce our world’s food waste have never been greater than they are now. Starting right in the United States, reducing food waste can deliver significant environmental, social and economic benefits.

Winging Supplies Across the Skies
Combining two loves is always a thrill. Using them to help those in need can put you on cloud nine. Or even above it, as the case may be.

That’s exactly what Minnesota native Louis Olsen did recently when he loaded his plane with the likes of work gloves, diapers and mosquito repellant – as well as 384 cans of SPAM® classic – to aid victims and first responders of Hurricane Harvey.

Hurricane Harvey Holiday Meal
With the aroma of turkey, ham and all the fixings in the air, and music playing in the background, volunteers served a holiday meal for more than 1,000 people affected by Hurricane Harvey at Celebration of Life Church in Baytown, Texas.

“Hurricane Harvey was one of the biggest disasters we’ve seen in recent years,” said Stacy Lamb, U.S. response director of disaster services at Convoy of Hope. “People’s lives have been turned upside down. They are still trying to figure out how to get their homes back in shape and back to normal, and then you have the holiday season.”

When Hormel Foods learned about the holiday meal that was being planned, the company donated over 700 Hormel® Cure 81® hams and its Jennie-O Turkey Store subsidiary donated over 700 turkeys.

Community Support
On a brisk Saturday morning in November, volunteers and area organizations in Austin, Minnesota, were busy getting everything ready for an event to help others in the community. Tables were being set up, groceries were being placed into bags and barber chairs were being brought in for haircuts.

Richard Lemons, co-chair of the Austin Poverty Taskforce, the organization that coordinated the event, said he was humbled and overwhelmed as he entered the high school gym where Austin’s first Community Connect event would be taking place. “I was moved by how many people cared and were giving their time to help out,” he said.
