Now Or Neverglades

The Everglades is a national treasure on the verge of extinction. Historic water flow has been altered, creating an imbalance which has left South Florida to suffer toxic blue-green algae blooms, drought conditions and a massive seagrass die-off. Orvis has joined with the Everglades Foundation in the fight to save the Everglades, and will match your donation to the Now Or Neverglades campaign, dollar for dollar, up to $45,000, for a goal of $90,000.

Everglades Legislation Passes Florida House
For more than a year, we have been beating the drum about the need to come up with a solution for the water problems of South Florida. Too much tainted water from Lake Okeechobee is being diverted down the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee Rivers, leading to big problems on both coasts. Last month, the Florida Senate passed an important bill that would fund the creation of a reservoir south of Okeechobee to store much of this excess water and relieve pressure on the rivers and their estuaries. Yesterday, the Florida House Passed the bill, as well, which means that we are one signature away from making this project a reality.

Great News for the Everglades
For more than a year, Orvis has been posting about the fight to restore water flows south of Lake Okeechobee and to stop discharges down the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie Rivers. Yesterday, the good guys won a major victory, as the Florida Senate passed SB10, a bill sponsored by Sen. Rob Bradley that funds the creation of a deep-water reservoir south of the big lake. The vote was 36-3 in favor of the project.
