CENTENNIAL, Colo., January 10, 2017 /3BL Media/ – Colorado-based global technology company Arrow Electronics is helping to promote a report by The Women’s Foundation of Colorado on gender equality in Colorado’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) industries.

The report, Gender Equity in Colorado’s STEM Industries: The Case for Focused Workforce Investment, found that Colorado ranks among the top 10 states in the country for the percentage of STEM-related jobs, but women are still notably underrepresented in those positions. It also lays out the advantages for companies that create a more inclusive environment and provides a roadmap to help companies recruit, retain and advance women in STEM.

Donna Tikkanen-Davis, a vice president of human resources at Arrow and champion of Arrow’s internal diversity and inclusion efforts, co-chairs the Women’s Foundation of Colorado’s STEM Coalition and was involved in the report’s release.

“It can be challenging for organizations to navigate the complexities of inclusive hiring and professional-development practices,” said Tikkanen-Davis. “We created this report to help employers navigate these complexities and to embrace best practices that help women thrive in STEM.”

“Not only do women enter STEM professions in fewer numbers than men, they also leave STEM careers more often than their male counterparts,” continued Tikkanen-Davis. “While significant challenges to gender diversity in STEM remain, it’s encouraging to see companies like Arrow actively leading the effort to reverse these trends.”

Under the leadership of Tikkanen-Davis and her colleagues on Arrow’s human resources team, Arrow has committed to actively improving the diversity of its workforce and talent pipeline. Arrow recently held its third annual Diversity Day recruiting event, which drew more than 90 diverse students from four Denver-area universities to obtain information on Arrow jobs and career paths. Arrow’s Diversity Day initiative and other innovative inclusion efforts were recently recognized by the Profiles in Diversity Journal.
