The critically-acclaimed film will be released directly to high schools across the nation so both educators and students can utilize the film as a learning and communication tool.
This innovative “Release in Schools” will kick-off on the week of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, 2011. Both public and private schools that will screen the film and then incorporate the overlapping messages of Bilal’s Stand and the great civil rights leader. The Writer/Director of the film, Sultan Sharrief, will then be available via video conference to discuss his own personal journey and take questions from the students.
As a part of the widely successful Take A Stand Campus Tour, Bilal’s Stand has already been screened at dozens of secondary schools and college campuses. Take A Stand encourages students to share their own personal stories together and leads to dialogue around key themes in the film – social justice, education, class and race, interfaith understanding, and personal responsibility. The accompanying curriculum can easily be adjusted to grade levels or community group interests depending on their goals. Bilal's Stand: Bilal’s Stand is Beyond Blue Productions’ first major work. It is a full-length narrative feature film that debuted at Sundance Film Festival and has since gone on to over a dozen festivals, has won several awards, and was made through the Student EFEX Project, which bucks all conventional production methods. Synopsis: Bilal - a Muslim high school senior in Detroit-works long hours to keep up both his grades and his family’s long-owned taxi stand. “The Stand” has been the family’s social financial hub for sixty years, and now Bilal is destined to carry the torch. Yet despite a series of setbacks at home, Bilal secretly submits a college application and takes up ice carving in order to win a scholarship. Now he is forced to decide whether to continue running The Stand- the only life he has ever known or take a chance at social mobility. Based on a true story, Bilal’s Stand radiates warmth, humor, and originality. In depicting a struggle that is all to common today, the film captures emotion and authenticity on issues rarely brought together on screen.
