Breaking the Bias This International Women's Day
As our thoughts are with the women and children affected by the war in Ukraine and conflicts elsewhere around the world, it’s important to support the hard-working organizations that continue to step up and step forward to create progress for women and girls.
We’re honoring many of our partners, including CARE, TIME, LISC, and Seneca Women, whose meaningful actions work to #BreaktheBias—not only on International Women’s Day, but every day.
Women have historically had to speak louder to get their voices heard, and this International Women’s Day, humanitarian agency CARE, is lifting women’s voices and amplifying them all over the world. Through CARE’s #HerVoice campaign, some of today’s most inspiring young voices read the iconic speeches of women, from Abolitionist and Women’s Rights Activist Sojourner Truth to National Youth Poet Laureate, Amanda Gorman. TIME magazine’s 100 Women of the Year project launched two years ago to recognize often overshadowed, yet remarkable women—leaders, innovators, activists, entertainers, athletes, and artists who defined a century—by creating 100 original TIME covers highlighting one each year from 1920-2019. This year TIME is building on the project by recognizing its inaugural Women of the Year list, which includes extraordinary honorees who work toward a more equal world. P&G is the presenting partner of TIME’s 2022 Women of the Year list. Building on a 2020 collaboration between P&G, Secret deodorant and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)—which provided more than $1.2 million in emergency grant assistance to Black women entrepreneurs and minority owned small businesses during the pandemic—this year, LISC will launch a pilot program in three cities to support Black and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) women-owned and led early childhood education centers. The program will provide flexible grants for projects intended to have a positive impact on the stability and growth of these small businesses.
The project also aims to deliver urgently needed capital to high priority childcare providers, whose businesses serve primarily women and children of color; to create a stronger childcare system with improved facilities; and to increase revenues and business growth. The program will pilot support strategies and build a roadmap on which to expand support nationwide for Black and BIPOC women through a childcare-focused and early learning lens. There is tremendous power to create change in our united voices. As part of its dedication to amplify women’s voices, support women creators and partner with organizations to advance women in the economy, Seneca Women Podcast Network and its partner iHeartMedia have launched the first-ever Seneca Women Podcast Academy. The Academy is the cornerstone of a nationwide search—called Seneca’s Women to Hear—to find the next ten female podcast stars. Each of the ten winners will get her own limited podcast series. Winners will receive podcast training in the Seneca Women Podcast Academy, as well as equipment and financial support. All around the world, women and girls face evolving realities to navigate with strength and resilience. It is in these most challenging times that it is important that we all continue to step up together to raise our collective voices.
