Last November, ILFI CEO Amanda Sturgeon spoke at TEDMED 2018, the independent health and medicine edition of the world-famous TED conference, dedicated to “ideas worth spreading.” In her speech, Amanda talked about biophilic design, human health, and how the former can benefit the latter, as well as the role architecture can play in bringing nature back to our (mostly indoor) lives.
Biophilic design is gaining traction as workplace wellness becomes a central focus in design studios, according to a recent survey by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI).
As Amanda Sturgeon, FAIA, CEO of ILFI writes in Creating Biophilic Buildings, “There’s a magic chemistry that happens between nature and architecture that can connect us to a place and ground us at the same time. Biophilic design as a discipline is really all about tapping into our primal need to be a part of nature and not apart from nature – it’s how we reconnect to ourselves, and to one another.”
Amanda will be signing copies of Creating Biophilic Buildings during Neocon at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, at the Teknion showroom in the Merchandise Mart, #1048, and is available for interviews by appointment.
The International Living Future Institute is hosting its third annual Living Product Expo this September 12-14 in Pittsburgh, the birthplace of American manufacturing. Manufacturers, interior designers, architects, sustainability directors, and engineers will gather to discuss healthy products for happier spaces.
The International Living Future Institute (ILFI) is now accepting submissions for the Stephen R. Kellert Biophilic Design Award that acknowledges Stephen Kellert's legacy as a pioneer in articulating and applying Biophilic Design principles to the built environment.
Etsy envisioned its new global headquarters as an opportunity to instigate change, to set a new standard for sustainable construction and design in a renovation project, and to create a space that reflected its values, especially those related to community, craft, and sustainability.
On October 7, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray signed legislation to continue the Living Building Pilot Program until 2025. The updated Living Building program legislation expands on a pilot program started in 2009 and increases the number of buildings that can participate to twenty. There are new provisions and adjustments in the legislation that align better with city and state laws, as well as streamline building codes to incentivize developers on adopting regenerative building practices.
