Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games

Vision of Milano Cortina 2026

The Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026 is the first Olympic winter Games planned and organised under Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendations. The organising committee aim to reduce the environmental impact of the Games, adapt to the host territory and its needs, and deliver long-lasting social and economic benefits for local residents.

The selection of venues reflects northern Italy’s ambition to become a world-class hub of excellence for winter sports. By leveraging existing expertise and infrastructure in hosting major sporting events, the Games will support the upgrade of facilities requiring investment, ensuring a lasting sporting legacy across the region.

The Games will also be conducive to greater cooperation in the entire Alpine macro-region, to improve the attractiveness of the mountains for tourists and residents.

Sustainability and Legacy

Capitalising on its winter sports legacy, Milano Cortina 2026 is prioritizing the use of local expertise and existing infrastructure, adapted to modern-day needs. Eighty-five per cent - 11 out of 13- of competition venues used for the Games are either existing or temporary.

Milano Cortina 2026 is embedding sustainability across various aspects of Games planning and delivery. Such as energy, procurement, transportation and water management.

The Games will be powered by 100% renewable energy, with all venues connected to the grid. The organisers are planning to recycle around 80% of urban waste generated by spectators, offices and catering services. The local train system will serve as a primary transport solution between clusters and the organisers are promoting the use of trains, shuttles and carpooling to reduce emissions. For the first time at the Olympic Winter Games, the Games’ water footprint will be measured and monitored to minimize consumption.

Aiming to leverage the Games to engage over five million people in sport and boost physical activity through education and impact programs such as the Gen 26 Education Program, The Cultural Olympiad, Italia dei Giochi.

Milano Cortina 2026 aims to boost regional economic growth by increasing tourism, creating jobs and investment opportunities. The Impact 2026 social procurement program ensures that economic opportunities are directed towards Italian social entreprises and small and medium-sized businesses.
