CNH Industrial Supports Young Talent
Earlier this year, the Engineering Shop team at CNH Industrial’s site in New Holland was able to support students from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (TSCT) in Lancaster who were working on a unique project for a national design competition.
Garth Martin, Engineering Shop Supervisor at CNH Industrial’s New Holland site, “We were contacted by students who were working on their submission for the 2020 Source America Design Challenge. They had designed a slide stool as a workplace solution to help a person with Cerebral Palsy who works as a cashier at a local store, and now they needed access to the right technology to make the actual parts.”
The students stopped by the New Holland Shop with prints and the local Engineering Shop employees helped them to make the parts needed for their innovative workplace solution. Three of the parts were turned on a CNC lathe and the other remaining three parts were programmed, cut on a laser and formed on a brake press.
Garth Martin, who also serves on the Weld Fabrication and the Electro Mechanical Advisory Committees for Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, “We are very proud to support creative minds and young talent. These students have designed an innovative yet practical solution that has a positive impact on someone’s life. We are thrilled that their accomplishment was recognized, and that Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology placed first in the 2020 Source America Design Challenge. Congratulations!”
Baird Thompson, then a freshman in Graphic Communications at TSCT, used his skills as a key contribution to the success of the team in the creation of this video; “it was a great experience for me to work with students in other majors, much more real world than can be created in typical classroom assignments”.
Brandon Myers, the impetus for recruiting a multi-disciplinary team, “Me, Nichita, and Nate all knew technical aspects of the design and construction of the prototype, however, we are not great story tellers to a non-technical audience, that’s where Baird’s expertise really paid off!”
Founded in 1905, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, Pennsylvania offers twenty-two high-skill technical programs for more than 1,300 students. CNH Industrial has had a very close relationship with the College providing tours and ‘real world’ learning opportunities for students as well as educating them not only on the many career paths in modern manufacturing, but also illustrating how the industry is transforming and has become more high-tech and innovative than ever before.
CNH Industrial also attends the Thaddeus Stevens College job fair where company representatives are able to talk to the students and provide insights and advice for any of the students who might wish to visit the engineering shop and consider a career in manufacturing. The New Holland site currently has several graduates from Thaddeus Stevens College working in the engineering shop.
CNH Industrial has also donated $2,500 to the Thaddeus Stevens Foundation in support of Motor Alignment Stands for Electro-Mechanical Technology. Supporting students and investing in the future of local communities is a key commitment at CNH Industrial, and the company is passionate about advancing educational opportunities for young people.
