Dancing Through Equity: The Journey to Creating an Equitable Workforce

At onsemi, equity - the process of meeting all individuals where their needs are to provide equal opportunities - allows our company to improve the employee experience and continue to drive our competitive edge. As a global company with more than 34,000 employees, we are passionate about creating a more diverse workplace that our employees can bring their whole self to.
onsemi is proud to announce the revitalization of Diversity & Inclusion and rebranding it to the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Initiative. By doing so, we aim to increase awareness and act against inherent inequities within our company policies and practices. The insertion of equity within our vision, mission and integrated strategy signifies a transition point as we take the next steps in our DEI journey.
Our vision is to embed DEI in everything we do. C-suite leadership is driving our DEI initiative from top-down, equity is now established as a key corporate pillar and policies are being rewritten. We are establishing a new DEI learning journey focused on bias, equity and inclusion for all employees. And, we are ramping efforts to attract diverse new talent through participation at career fairs with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), IEEE Women in Engineering (WiE) along with partnerships at four historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
We are also rebranding our employee resource groups (ERGs). Our first ERG, established in 2014, was formed to address the gap we were seeing for women in leadership at the director, vice president and c-suite levels. In identifying this area of improvement allowed us to then solve for gaps and develop to provide manager-level employees the skills needed to enter these roles. Since 2014 – we’ve increased the number of women in these positions by 85.7%.
Today, we have six ERGs that maintain emphasis on the acquisition, promotion, and retention of diverse employees:
- WE – Empower women to succeed through business, strategic and financial acumen
- STEM UP – Develop talent through lifelong science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education for a diverse workforce
- Cultivate – Unite a group of diverse generations to enhance company culture
- B.E.N. – Foster recruitment, retention and career advancement of Black employees
- Veteran & Military Employees (VME) – Recruit, develop and retain veteran and military members
- Continua – Cultivate an inclusive workplace for employees who are and support LGBTQ+ people.
It is said that “what gets measured, gets done.” Therefore, we have established a quarterly scorecard that measures diverse representation, recruitment, retention and advancement opportunities. We recently launched a US-based voluntarily employee self-id campaign with enhance options for military veterans, gender identity and sexual orientation.
We also actively participate in industry recognized diversity surveys such as the Bloomberg Corporate Equality index (CEI), McKinsey Women in the Workplace, Human Rights Campaign (HRC-CEI), Military Friendly and others where we will use this data to guide our DEI strategy.
There is a famous quote by Verna Myers, a leading diversity and inclusion expert that says, “Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance.” And, to expand on this quote, “Equity” would involve creating enough space for everyone to express themselves on the dance floor.
This is an exciting time to be a part of onsemi as we accelerate efforts at becoming best-in-class. We are actively seeking to add new diverse talent to our team.
