DIRECTV Hosts City Year Los Angeles Corps Members
On Tuesday, March 31, DIRECTV welcomed 25 young people serving as City Year Los Angeles AmeriCorps members to their headquarters in El Segundo, Calif. The event focused on preparing the City Year corps members for careers after their year of service in high-need schools.
Mike White, DIRECTV Chairman, President and CEO, offered advice to the group on navigating their careers, leveraging their passions, and emphasized the importance of building a strong network. Joe Bosch, Executive Vice President of Human Resources, spoke to the group about identifying mentors, the value of effective communication, and seeking out stretch assignments in order to continually develop leadership skills.
After hearing from DIRECTV’s senior leadership, the group heard from the company’s Talent Acquisition team, who provided insider tips on resume building and interviewing. This was followed by a speed networking session where the corps members met with members of DIRECTV’s Young Professionals Network (YPN), an Employee Resource Group comprised of emerging leaders from throughout the company.
City Year’s visit ended in the Rich Eisen studio, where the corps members got a behind-the-scenes set tour of one of DIRECTV’s most popular original programs.
DIRECTV/City Year Los Angeles Partnership:
City Year is a national service organization that unites diverse young adults, ages 17 to 24, for a year of full-time service as tutors, mentors and role models in high-need schools where the majority of students need extra support. For the 2014-2015 school year, DIRECTV is City Year Los Angeles’ Strategic Math Sponsor. DIRECTV’s grant has helped to underwrite the math training and development of all 288 AmeriCorps members serving as tutors and mentors at 25 elementary, middle and high schools across LA. In addition, DIRECTV’s support helped City Year Los Angeles develop a Math Coordinator position at each school. The 25 AmeriCorps members selected to be their school’s Math Coordinator were invited to visit DIRECTV for the special professional development event on March 31.
