Heading Into ‘Movember’ With Positive Medical Research About Prostate Cancer
by Sangeeta Haindl
A high percentage of men around the world are growing their moustaches for November, a month now known as ‘Movember’, which is officially a health month for men. The Movember Foundation challenges men to grow moustaches during this month, to spark conversation and raise vital funds for its men’s health programs. Till now four million moustaches have been grown worldwide, raising £346/$557 million to date and funded over 800 programmes in 21 countries. This work is saving and improving the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems.
This year we are going into Movember with good news, as a medical study by researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute have identified a set of RNA molecules that are detectable in tissue samples and urine of prostate cancer patients, but not in normal healthy individuals. The findings sets the stage for the development of more sensitive and specific non-invasive tests for prostate cancer than currently available, which could result in fewer unnecessary prostate biopsies with less treatment-related morbidity. The research is published in Elsevier’s title, The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics.
