INFOGRAPHIC: How the JetBlue Foundation Is Building a Diverse Aviation Industry
As featured in JetBlue’s 2018 Sustainability Accounting Standards Board Report
The JetBlue Foundation supports aviation-related education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, a strategic need for the aviation industry. No other airline has a foundation solely dedicated to supporting aviation education. We see an industry need for our strategic philanthropic focus:
- Fewer than 7% of U.S. commercial pilots are women.*
- African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics/Latinos combined make up 13.7% of the aircraft pilots and flight engineers in the U.S. **
- Women make up 3% of aircraft mechanics and service technicians.*
- 9.1% of aircraft mechanics are black.**
We aim to promote equal opportunities by inspiring underrepresented groups to take up STEM fields by exposing them to aviation employment options and opportunities. By fueling the pipeline today through our support of educational initiatives and STEM programs, we will help to ensure more diverse perspectives in the hangars and boardrooms of the future.
