By trapping carbon, these magnificent tropical forests help curb climate change and produce the air we all depend on. They also provide wildlife habitat and a more sustainable future for the people who live among tropical forests; more than 90% of those who live on less than $1 per day depend on such forests for their livelihoods.
Stand For Trees represents a first-of-its kind consumer campaign that uses the power of social media and crowd funding to enable everyone to take real and effective action to prevent deforestation and curb climate change. The campaign comes at a time when we are currently losing a forest area the size of New York City every 48 hours. At this rate, there could be no tropical forests left on Earth by the end of this century, a scenario that could have profoundly negative impacts on the climate system and life on Earth.
“While corporations have offset with REDD+ carbon credits for years, until now everyday people had no convenient way to join the movement. With Stand For Trees, they do,” said Karin Burns, executive director of Code REDD. “Buying Stand For Trees Certificates offers a responsible way to address our greenhouse gas emissions because they prevent deforestation and help forest communities develop more sustainable livelihoods.”
Each Stand For Trees Certificate is a high-quality, REDD+ verified carbon credit that meets rigorous standards set by the Verified Carbon Standard and the Climate Community and Biodiversity Alliance, a partnership of leading NGOs that includes CARE, The Nature Conservancy, and Rainforest Alliance. The Certificates are registered on the world’s largest environmental registry services provider, Markit, and meet Code REDD’s peer-reviewed international Code of Conduct.
Proceeds from the sale of the Certificates help communities protect specific endangered forests and wildlife habitats while supporting local projects such as building and staffing schools, digging clean-water wells, and installing clean-burning cook stoves.
