October 8, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Facilitated by IfM Education and Consultancy Services (IfM ECS) at the University of Cambridge, the multifaceted relationship will provide Mars with access to cutting-edge research, whilst bringing the work of the University and its students closer to industry and commercial applications.

The collaboration seeks to build on the existing project-based relationship between Mars and IfM ECS towards a planned program of activity with the aim of addressing the challenges Mars and the wider food industry face. Food security, safety and quality challenges will be the initial focus before it is widened over a 10-year agreement.

“We value collaborative relationships that can build on our existing best practices and create lasting positive change,” says Richard Ware, global vice president of Mars, Incorporated. “The University of Cambridge is a world-class research partner that shares our commitment to open dialogue and an evidence-based approach in the pursuit of establishing business priorities that can benefit society. We look forward to working together on what is an important time for our collective understanding on the global issue of food security.”

Professor Lynn Gladden, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University, says: “On behalf of the University of Cambridge I look forward to working closely with Mars to expand an already very successful long-term relationship into a range of new areas across the University.”

The collaboration between Mars and the University of Cambridge will promote four key areas of focus:

  • Scientific research led by the University of Cambridge and funded by Mars

  • Consultancy in science, technology and management sciences

  • Education and training including developing customized courses for Mars University and Mars Associates in areas such as manufacturing management and research and development. Members of the Mars leadership team will also offer their insights to Cambridge students on the topics of food safety and quality during public lectures

  • Recruitment and industrial placements within Mars for Cambridge undergraduate and PhD students.

By investing in scientific research and cross-sector collaborations, Mars aims to discover and implement new knowledge capable of addressing key business challenges including climate change and food security.

With the University, Mars will seek to discover new technologies to improve the sustainability performance of the business, boost its supplies of sustainable raw materials and improve the nutritional profile of its products.
