Microsoft CityNext Harnesses Technology to Build Smart, Sustainable Cities

Microsoft launched its ambitious CityNext global initiative last year at a time when major cities around the world have been looking at ways to optimize their resources and improve their sustainability. CityNext is employing cutting edge technologies to support this effort and build smart, sustainable cities. In one year, the project has already gathered significant momentum with the launch of 14 showcase cities, and has created over 200 partnerships and gone from having zero to more than 700 solutions.

Microsoft’s smart city approach resonates with its company-wide mobile-first, cloud-first strategy that has been announced by CEO Satya Nadella. The goal is to “do more with less and new with less,” which can be achieved through technology and innovation. Population in major cities around the world continues to grow, and greater efficiency and optimal use of resources is critical to sustaining this growth.
