March 10, 2015 /3BL Media/ - More than 100 people took part in KIPP Charlotte’s Physical and Fit:  Fighting Obesity Day, an event aimed at engaging the community in various fitness-themed activities to encourage active and healthy lifestyles. Volunteers from UnitedHealthcare managed fitness stations, such as yoga, martial arts and dance, and distributed Food For Thought kits to students, parents and families.

KIPP Charlotte is a free, open-enrollment, college preparatory public school serving almost 400 students in grades five through eight. KIPP Charlotte serves underserved communities that often lack access to quality education.

UnitedHealthcare is also funding significant enhancements to KIPP Charlotte’s fitness and nutrition programs. These include training and exercising programs in the renovated weight room with new sports equipment, and providing healthy snacks during the school’s extracurricular activities.

Financial support from UnitedHealthcare will also provide three semesters worth of coaching stipends for five different sports and activities, including dance, martial arts, lacrosse, volleyball and cheerleading. New uniforms will also be purchased for the school’s basketball and cross-country teams.

UnitedHealthcare’s support of KIPP Charlotte is part of the CBS EcoMedia WellnessAd program. An estimated 25,000 student hours in extracurricular activities will be generated as a result of this partnership.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to support KIPP Charlotte by providing its students with the materials and upgrades needed to encourage healthy and active lifestyles,” said Garland Scott, CEO, UnitedHealthcare of the Carolinas.

This project is the latest in UnitedHealthcare’s “Do Good. Live Well.” employee volunteer initiative, whose mission is to inspire service and encourage volunteerism.
