Musselwhite’s Women in Mining
At Goldcorp, we strive to foster an open and inclusive workplace environment and strongly support the principle that everyone should have an equal opportunity to participate in our company and achieve their full potential.
Traditionally a male-dominated industry, mining is changing. Gender diversity has been a focus for Goldcorp, along with all aspects of diversity and inclusion. Overcoming barriers to development, whether it’s language or specific skill-sets, and looking at an individual’s potential and aptitude instead, creates diverse teams with different viewpoints and experience.
The number of women seeking challenging careers in mining is increasingly evident at our mine sites. “Now, more than ever, we are seeing an increase in women joining the mining industry,” notes Peter Gula, Musselwhite Mine General Manager. “At Musselwhite mine, we are creating a culture that fosters diversity, inclusion and creativity where you can thrive and grow professionally.”
In a bid to attract more women into mining related careers, Musselwhite recently produced Women in Mining, a video focusing on the diverse range of roles and cultural experiences of four women at the operation. With backgrounds ranging from Thunder Bay, to Peru and Iceland, the women discuss their careers, balancing work schedules and locations, and how diversity broadens their roles within Goldcorp, where men and women can both grow professionally.
Doris Achircano, Environmental EIT from Peru, says in the video, “There are no barriers anymore, that is in the past. Everything is possible and yes we can do it!”
By bringing together people from diverse backgrounds and cultures and giving each person the opportunity to contribute their skills, experience and perspectives, we believe that we can deliver the best solutions and support our values to be Safe, Productive, and Responsible. “The more diverse the team is, the better ideas a team comes up with, and the more efficient it is,” concurs Anna Tudela, Goldcorp’s VP, Diversity, Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Secretary. “So, by increasing the number of women in the mining industry we are changing the way things are getting done.”
