When I First Met My Child

Families come in all shapes and sizes and not all families meet on the day a child is born. Did you know there are over 130,000 children waiting to be adopted from foster care in the U.S. and Canada? That is more than 130,000 children who just want a forever family, someone to help them with their homework and tuck them in at night.

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is committed to dramatically increasing the number of adoptions from foster care. The Foundation does this by raising awareness about foster care adoption, funding grants to private and public agencies to hire specialized adoption recruiters and by providing national grants to other worthy organizations. 

Our adoption recruiters are called Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiters. They are employed by the agencies in their states, but our grant money funds their salaries. They use our child-focused model, which means they form relationships with the children on their caseload and keep their needs as the top priority. It works. Our child-focused model is up to three times more likely to help find children forever families than typical methods.
