Smithfield’s contribution was part of the company’s 2019 Helping Hungry Homes® donation tour. Helping Hungry Homes® is Smithfield’s signature hunger-relief initiative focused on alleviating hunger and helping Americans become more food secure. Three winners of the eighth annual Hormel Foods MLK essay contest visited the Hormel Foods corporate offices today to read their winning essays to company employees. The students – Patrick Brown from Little Rock, Ark., Blessyn Champ from Minneapolis, Minn., and Ben Kim from Atlanta, Ga. – claimed the top honors among hundreds of entries from 19 different schools this year. Their visit to the corporate office marks the second time the company has invited essay winners in for a reading.

Just as the sun was rising Tuesday morning, Misti Sporer and Max Gardner walked quietly into the woods toward their goal: a gigantic bald eagle nest just below the crown of a loblolly pine. All talking ceased once they were within about 100 feet. Gardner held back a short distance as Sporer, lead environmental scientist for Duke Energy, moved closer for a 60- to 90-minute observation period.
