“I think I always thought I might be in the insurance business,” said Dan Amos, CEO of Aflac. “My family had been in it and it was just something I thought I might like.”
Working at Aflac since he was 14 years old, Amos and his company have been named a World’s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute for 12 straight years. Dan, himself has been named by Harvard Business Review as one of the 100 Best Performing CEOs in the World for four consecutive years. So we sent Chloe, an 11-year-old pediatric cancer survivor, and a national ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® to interview Amos for a new video series, Tough Questions.
In what he describes – tongue firmly in cheek – as “one of the toughest interviews I’ve ever done,” Aflac Chairman and CEO Dan Amos, the second longest tenured CEO in the Fortune 200 and 4-time recipient of the Harvard Business Review’s recognition as one of the 100 Best-Performing CEOs in the World, recently sat down at the company’s headquarters in Columbus, Georgia, for an interview with 11-year-old cancer survivor Chloe Davison of Grants Pass, Oregon. In this “hard-hitting” examination, they covered several crucial topics such as where Amos’ dogs sleep when his wife is traveling, how the Aflac Duck came to be and My Special Aflac Duck™ – a robotic duck designed to help children cope with cancer that Aflac is giving to every newly diagnosed child with cancer, between the ages of 3-13.

She designed Camélia Rose in tribute to the countless courageous women who have battled breast cancer, and we designated her new collection to help support Susan G. Komen’s fight against breast cancer.

The number of new cancer diagnoses is increasing. In 2018, more than 1.7 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer – that’s 46,570 more cases than in 2017. This increase in diagnoses is proof that prevention and early detection are more critical now than ever. And research shows that up to 50 percent of cancer cases and about 50 percent of cancer deaths are preventablewith the knowledge we have today. Addressing this issue is the Prevent Cancer Foundation®, which is working to reduce the cancer mortality rate by focusing on research, education, outreach and advocacy for cancer prevention, and for early detection when cancers are most treatable.
