Meet Africa Exchange, a North Carolina-based nonprofit that has been building an international coalition to solve community issues in East Africa since 1997. Africa Exchange strives to solve the most pressing issues facing the most marginalized within society, by identifying areas of need as expressed by local communities and working alongside community members to develop solutions to the problem.
My impatience has been a red thread through many of my experiences, specifically in a space that is chock-full of opportunity, like our Corporate Responsibility work at MilliporeSigma. This experience started years ago with a novel product now known at Cyrene™. One of my team members did the legwork to identify a novel solution that could be a potential replacement for two challenging but ubiquitous solvents. While these solvents are extremely common, they’re under increasing scrutiny from organizations like Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).

The use of virtual reality technology offers some key opportunities to improve social risk management on projects. First, enabling indigenous communities to visualize the future state of a project can enhance the “informed consultation process” between project sponsors and communities. Second, it helps shift indigenous communities from observers to more active participants – technically and spiritually – in how the project will impact their long-term, sustainable development. Finally, it can be a mechanism to help new workers joining the project to more effectively understand how the construction can affect the socio-political, cultural and environmental context of the impacted indigenous communities.

n coordination with the Joint Services Academy, Booz Allen sponsored workshops in February and April 2019, with the collective ingenuity of the cybersecurity community. The workshops, which included experts from industry, government, and academia, focused on identifying, scoping and setting a path forward regarding the “Grand Challenges” that are anticipated to impact cybersecurity over the next 10 years. Insights from these working sessions served as a precursor to the Joint Services Academy Cybersecurity Summit, held at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado, April 17-18, 2019.
