Increasing STEM Access and Changing Perceptions

Sometimes ideas are hatched and shared in the most fortuitous places — and you don’t even know it. It all began when one of my team members and I were at our first Global Communicators Conference in Wiesbaden, Germany, following the acquisition of the company that we had been working for. It was an awe-inspiring experience, mainly because our new company — Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany — was launching a completely new brand and this was one of the first internal events to showcase the new look, feel and messaging. In light of this new approach, we formed teams to come up with new ideas that supported our new brand. Daniel Sherling, the auteur of this novel concept, shared his concept of creating a mobile science lab out of a shipping container that could address the need we saw around acc

Partners in Purpose: Cape Town Officials and Kimberly-Clark Address Water Scarcity

By 2030, 40% of the world's population will live in water-stressed areas. One of those areas is Cape Town, South Africa.
Kimberly-Clark partnered with Deltares to develop an innovative dashboard called WaterLOUPE, which can be used to see current and future risks to water availability.

Drip By Drip: How We Solve the Global Water Scarcity Crisis

As the global population continues to rapidly grow, the demand for fresh water is growing with it. Even without accounting for shifting weather patterns driving regional droughts like those seen recently in California and the Horn of Africa, demand for fresh water for agricultural, industrial and municipal use is predicted to increase by 50% globally between 2000 and 2030.

However, the supply of water is not keeping pace with demand. By 2030, scientists project there will be a 40% gap between the expected need for and availability of water.

This situation is unsustainable. If we are to support a growing, increasingly demanding world, we must tackle the water scarcity crisis –so where can we find the water we need?

We provide teachers with free materials that fill critical resource gaps, build classroom libraries, and make it easy to engage and educate students. We offer thousands of grab-and-go lesson plans, discussion guides, extension activities, and teacher tool-kits. We often team up with companies on these materials and are thrilled to have recently launched #CyberSmarts, a new collaboration with Norton LifeLock and Symantec.

Computational Thinking: “Decomposing" Problems & Separating Fact from Fiction

The human brain is exposed to around 100,500 words per day – 23 words per second according to a University of California-San Diego study. Each day, our brains take in an average of 34 gigabytes of information, enough information to crash a computer within one week. This information overload especially affects students in school today, who are more connected to the internet than any other generation. To prepare their students for the 21st century, educators must arm students with strategies to navigate and process the vast amount of information they consume to help them distinguish fact from fiction. In my classroom, I use a program called Ignite My Future in School to address this information overload and to help my students become more conscientious about how they evaluate information.
