South Africa is home to some of the world’s best universities, but the average young South African likely won’t step foot on any of the country’s prestigious campuses. The legacy of apartheid has perpetuated an economic and education system inaccessible to the vast majority of youth. According to the Public Council of Higher Education in South Africa, only 16 percent of black South Africans go to college—the country is 80 percent black. Access to tertiary education has emerged as a common issue of discourse in South Africa’s political and social landscape as students across the country protest rising tuition costs and unequal access.

Microsoft Philanthropies Expands Program that Sends Tech Company Volunteers into High Schools to Teach Computer Science

Microsoft Philanthropies on Monday announced the expansion of TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools), which pairs technology professionals with teachers to “co-teach” computer science. The TEALS program will add nearly 100 schools in the United States, and will recruit 1,100 volunteers, for the coming school year. Volunteers come from companies ranging from small startups to large brands such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft Corp., among others. Volunteers are invited to apply through the TEALS website.

Water Resources Fund Provides $5 Million for Waterways

Impact at Work: Communities in Schools San Antonio Project Spotlight

Common Impact has partnered with JPMorgan Chase since 2014 on the Virtual Service Corps (VSC), a skills-based volunteering program where employees utilize their talents and expertise virtually to support JPMorgan Chase’s nonprofit grantees in building capacity to serve the community. Recently, a team of JPMorgan Chase technologists supported Communities In Schools of San Antonio (CIS-SA), a San Antonio-based nonprofit dedicated to keeping kids in school and helping them succeed in life. The JPMorgan Chase volunteers worked with CIS-SA to assess their technology infrastructure and create a set of recommendations for improvements.

Points of Light Honors 6000th Recipient of the Daily Point of Light Award

Today, Points of Light honors Kylee McGrane, founder of A Moment of Magic, with the 6000th Daily Point of Light Award. The award was established in 1989 by President George H.W. Bush to celebrate the power of individuals to create change and improve the world. To this day, it is signed by the President and is presented by Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service.
