On World Refugee Day: An Opportunity to Change the Narrative

In 2016, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) launched a #WithRefugees campaign and petition and to date, almost two million people have pledged their support. With World Refugee Day this month, the UNHCR hopes to continue to build momentum for this petition, which encourages decision makers to ensure three basic goals: that every refugee child gets an education, has somewhere safe to live, and can work or learn new skills to support their families.

Service Unites 2018, powered by Points of Light, convened nearly 2,000 nonprofit, government, business and civic leaders from 38 countries to gain and share the knowledge, resources and connections needed to galvanize the power of people to create change globally. During the three-day Atlanta event, Points of Light recognized four inspiring changemakers by presenting them with Daily Point of Light Awards, a prestigious honor started by President George H.W. Bush during his presidency. Points of Light also announced the 2018 honorees of The Civic 50, a recognition of the 50 most community-minded companies in the United States.

Approximately 1,400 Astellas employees gathered at the company's National Sales Forum to support non-profits in and around Anaheim as part of its annual day of service program, Changing Tomorrow Day, where the organization comes together to roll up its sleeves and help build brighter communities. Astellas is committed to addressing the unmet needs of communities where we live and work, such as aiding those impacted by the devastating wildfires in California, supporting underserved food banks, supporting health and wellness institutions and other activities that help communities when they need it most.

Points of Light Announces 2018 Honorees of The Civic 50 at Service Unites

Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service announced The Civic 50 honorees of 2018, recognizing them as the most community-minded companies in the United States. Since 2011, The Civic 50 has provided a national standard for superior corporate citizenship and showcased how companies can use their time, skills and other resources to improve the quality of life in the communities where they do business.

Shaping the Future of Skills-Based Volunteerism

Last week, the Common Impact team gathered in our Brooklyn offices to connect as colleagues and plan for the work ahead of us. As a growing and geographically dispersed organization, it was the first time many of us had a chance to engage face-to-face in important conversations on the future of pro bono work, and it also provided an opportunity for the team to re-connect with our mission and each other.
