Connecting Business to Cause

Social impact is the new standard for how companies address social and environmental issues to drive meaningful and positive change. Through cause-marketing campaigns, event sponsorships, workplace giving programs, volunteerism and pro bono work, companies of all types and sizes are choosing to make an impact through partnerships with specific charities and causes.

In this series, we’re featuring collaborative partnerships between businesses and charities to share how those relationships were formed, what they’re on a mission to accomplish, and what makes them effective. We're also featuring issues regarding a range of causes - animals, human rights, health and research, military and veterans, children, education, elderly, poverty, hunger, and more - and connecting you with charities addressing those issues.

If you come across a cause or specific charity you would like your company to support, America's Charities team of consultants can connect you with the right charity and help you set up a corporate giving program and strategy that fits your needs.  To contact our team, visit www.charities.org/contact.

Providing Assistance to Employees Who Have a Sudden Financial Emergency Due to a Catastrophe or Crisis in Their Life
44% of Americans can’t cover a $400 unexpected emergency expense and only 39% of Americans say they have enough savings to cover a $1,000 emergency room visit or car repair. No matter the scale or severity of the crisis, employee financial stress costs employers an average of $5,000 per employee per year in lost productivity. Employers have an opportunity to address this problem and demonstrate their commitment to the well-being of their workforce through Employee Assistance Funds (EAF) – also known as an Employee Relief Fund or an Employee Crisis Fund.

This Older Americans Month, Help Fight Senior Hunger
Older Americans Month, which was originally called "Senior Citizens Month" and takes place in May each year, was designated in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy and the National Council of Senior Citizens as a time to pay tribute to the contributions of past and current older persons to our country. At that time, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. Today, about one in every seven Americans is over the age of 65 and by 2040 that number will swell to one in five.

Preventing, Treating, and Surviving Melanoma - the Most Dangerous Type of Skin Cancer
Melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer. In addition to the skin, melanoma may also occur in mucous membranes – thin, moist layers of tissue that cover surfaces such as the lips – or in the eye. It is more likely to invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body than the more common forms of skin cancer. While melanoma represents just 5 percent of the skin cancer cases diagnosed in the United States each year, it results in the highest rate of deaths.

Law Day 2019: Celebrating Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society
Taking place on May 1st each year, Law Day is a national day established by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1958 to mark the nation's commitment to the rule of law. Law Day provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share.

Environment

Embrace Our Beautiful Planet and Our Shared Responsibility to Protect it
50 years ago, the EPA did not exist, which meant there was no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act, and no legal regulatory mechanism to protect our environment. This all changed in April 1970 when Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. Twenty million Americans demonstrated in different U.S. cities, and it worked! In December 1970, Congress authorized the creation of a new federal agency to tackle environmental issues, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Now, each year on April 22, people all around the world come together on Earth Day to celebrate the planet's environment and raise public awareness about pollution.
