A Little Bit of Everything
I was diagnosed with stage IIIA lung cancer October 24, 2006. At 26 years old I was excited about the future, and cancer was not part of my plan. For the next seven months I battled it with my family, friends, and medical team by my side. At the time, chemo, surgery and radiation were the standard of care. I was sick, I spent entire days in bed, my bones ached, my hair fell out, but there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

Sharing My Skin Cancer Story
Telling people about my cancer diagnosis was not easy to do. At the time of my diagnosis, we were in a different world than we are today. I had some skin cancers that came up on the top of my forehead. I didn’t tell anyone about it. I didn’t tell family, parents, anybody else. I was a sophomore at the University of Texas playing golf. I didn’t talk to anybody because I was afraid I would lose my scholarship. I was afraid I would lose my opportunity to compete.

Often survivors want someone to be present and listen, cry and laugh with them, ask tough questions and take notes during doctors meetings, help them coordinate different parts of their lives during treatment, and remember to bring lip balm, a fluffy blanket and a journal to doodle in.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Text to Connect Pilot Kicks Off
There are more than 14.5 million cancer survivors in the United States today, and the LIVESTRONG Foundation is always looking for new ways to improve access to our navigation services. Last month we launched a “text to connect” pilot project at select YMCA locations that offer the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program.

A Young Adult Survivor Story: 15 Years in the Making
Nearly 72,000 young adults, ages 15-39, are diagnosed with cancer every year. April is the time when we highlight the unique challenges that young adult cancer survivors face like school, jobs, dating, getting married and having children. Over the years, LIVESTRONG has interviewed thousands of cancer survivors. Many of those survivors were filmed for our website including a woman named Kim Bergeron. Kim applied to become a LIVESTRONGLeader this year and we jumped at the chance to share her survivor story again 15 years in the making.

LIVESTRONG Welcomes $1 Million Donation from Michigan Couple
When Jeri Mulder was just 20 years old, she went through an experience with cancer that she hoped nobody would ever have to face again. 28 years later, she and her husband Jeff will donate $1 million to the LIVESTRONG Foundation through their family’s Shine Foundation to ensure that cancer patients and survivors get the support and access to care she didn’t have.
