Imagine a product that functions as elegantly and efficiently as anything found in the natural world. Now imagine that product is manufactured for use in buildings, which are responsible for a majority of greenhouse gas emissions, and you begin to see how a truly sustainable product, used to build a Living Building, might significantly impact climate change. That’s the idea behind the Living Product Challenge, launched by the International Living Future Institute in 2015; a challenge that was met by two forward thinking companies just one year later: Owens Corning and SIREWALL, who have received certification for the world’s first Living Products.
The International Living Future Institute (ILFI) announced today that Anthony Guerrero, Director of Sustainability at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), will join the ILFI’s Board of Directors. Guerrero leads the development of sustainability strategies for NRDC’s core operations, and has already instituted Living Building Challenge (LBC) principles into his projects. Under his leadership, NRDC achieved LBC Petal Certifications for its Chicago and Beijing offices, and is pursuing certification for its newest expansions in Chicago and San Francisco.
On April 4, 2016, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that the Living Future Institute’s Declare label is now an approved pathway for Option 1 of the Building Product Optimization and Disclosure, Material Ingredients credit for LEED v4. Declare labels with ingredient disclosure greater than 1,000ppm now comply with the LEED v4 credit requirements.
