VIDEO | Barclays Citizenship Awards: Sabrina Boanu-Williams Works with the Thameside Prison Initiative
Through her work with the Thameside Prison Initiative, Sabrina is successfully helping prisoners gain the skills they need to find meaningful employment after release. According to government figures, 46% of adult prisoners re-offend within a year of release, costing UK taxpayers £13bn a year. Giving prisoners the confidence and skills to gain meaningful employment after release greatly lessens the chance of re-offending. Sabrina created an initiative with Thameside Prison, using the Barclays LifeSkills programme, to improve prisoner presentation and digital skills to prepare them for work. She recruited 50 colleagues to volunteer their skills to help deliver the programme.
Citizenship can take many different forms – from supporting entrepreneurs to helping young people develop their employment skills. The annual Barclays Citizenship Awards recognise those colleagues who make that difference and create opportunities to rise.
