Albina Ruiz lived in an area of Lima, Peru, known as El Cono Norte, where she was studying to become an industrial engineer. Despite the classic beautiful images of Peru one might expect, El Cono Norte was littered with waste.
One third of the world’s 1.8 billion young people are currently neither in employment, education or training. Of the one billion more youth that will enter the job market in the next decade, only 40 percent are expected to be able to get jobs that currently exist. The global economy will need to create 600 million jobs over the next 10 years – five million jobs each month -- simply to keep pace with projected youth employment rates.
Republic Services’ Conestoga Landfill in Morgantown, PA recently hosted a ribbon cutting grand opening event for the site’s newly completed $15-million waste water treatment plant. The plant is one of only three nationwide for Republic and took nearly four years to design and build. Fully in operation since April 2015, the plant utilizes cutting edge technology to provide the latest in environmental protection in the processing of waste water.
GSK today announced that it has submitted a regulatory application to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for its antiseptic chlorhexidine gel (7.1% chlorhexidine digluconate gel, equivalent to 4% chlorhexidine) for the prevention of umbilical cord infections (omphalitis) in newborn babies. GSK’s work to develop the gel began in response to a call from the United Nations (UN) in 2012 for manufacturers to make a high quality chlorhexidine product suitable for newborn infants in low resources settings.
