Wendy's Unveils New Smart Family of Designs

As part of its efforts to grow and differentiate the brand while keeping energy stewardship at the forefront, Wendy’s® recently unveiled a new “Smart Family of Designs,” providing a portfolio of development options to franchisees, including buildings that fit into smaller footprints. Wendy’s recently introduced the Smart 2.0 design, which reduces environmental impact and includes features that promote energy efficiency.

Sustainably Grown® Certification Earns More High Marks

In its “ABC’s of Food Labels,” U.S. non-profit Green America has awarded SCS Global Services’ Sustainably Grown® certification program four and a half stars, among the highest rankings earned by any of the popular global sustainable agriculture ecolabels. This is just the latest recognition received by Sustainably Grown, which covers a comprehensive set of environmental, social, economic, safety and quality attributes related to the production of fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, nuts, cut flowers, and ornamental plants. Additionally, Sustainably Grown certification is well aligned with consumer demand, according to a recent nationwide study of U.S. shoppers. The research was conducted by Category Partners, one of the leading third-party fresh produce analytics firms in the U.S.

“Power to Grow” is the challenge that La Red de Innovación e Impacto is promoting with the goal to support micro enterprises of the agriculture, agroindustry and textile sectors in Central America. Regarding Nicaragua, the selected organization will be working with Centro de Producción Más Limpia de Nicaragua (CPmL-N) and will be required to be knowledgeable about the agriculture and agroindustry sectors; have experience in export programs development; preferably, have previous experience in projects to support and strengthen MSMEs exporting capacity; as well as have consolidated experience in scaling micro enterprises and small farmers to the international level.

En el caso de Nicaragua, la organización seleccionada deberá trabajar con el Centro de Producción Más Limpia de Nicaragua, (CPmL-N), tener conocimiento de los sectores de agricultura y agroindustria; experiencia en desarrollar programas de exportaciones; experiencia previa preferible en proyectos ejecutados para brindar asesoría técnica sobre el diseño y el fortalecimiento de las capacidades de exportaciones para pymes; así como experiencia consolidada en escalar micro emprendimientos y pequeños agricultores a nivel internacional.

The initiative aims to find organizations specialized in the MSME development in the Central American region and reward their contribution to the economic growth of the countries by providing them with resources.

Smithfield Foods Invests in Sustainable Agronomics: Q&A with Bill Gill

In early December 2016, Smithfield Foods became the first major livestock company to set an absolute supply chain goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The world’s largest pork producer committed to cutting emissions in its US supply chain 25% by 2025.

“We’re getting a lot of input from our customers, NGOs, and different groups as to how we can participate in an effort to reduce our carbon emissions,” says Bill Gill, assistant vice president for sustainability at Smithfield Foods.

Gill, who has been with the company for just over 30 years, heads up environmental and sustainability efforts there. He says that Smithfield has partnered with the University of Minnesota and the Environmental Defense Fund to develop a science-based approach for reducing emissions.
