One event taking place to empower people within the community is Philly Fighting Asian Hate, taking place at the Rail Park in Philadelphia, on May 22-23. It aims to educate and empower the AAPI community through self-awareness and self-defense.
This quarter, we’re highlighting the work of the Irish International Immigrant Center (IIIC), Boston’s Welcome Center for immigrant families, and who are working towards a shared society where all are welcomed and valued, and enjoy equal opportunities and protections. IIIC assists immigrant and refugee families from around the world as they integrate into American society. They do so by providing legal, wellness and education services, advocating for systemic change, and facilitating cross-cultural community building.

Tom Doll, president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. and 12 Subaru volunteers joined Camden County Habitat for Humanity, on June 16, to begin building a new home and a bright future for The Martinez Family, Jessica, her six-year-old son Ethan and baby girl arriving in September. Jessica is a single parent, who works a full-time job and goes to school. She is looking forward to having a place for her kids to call home. A place where Ethan can share his love of sports with his new sister.

Since 2013, Sands for Singapore has been supporting the local deaf community by working closely with one of Marina Bay Sands’ designated charities, Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf). The property has been privileged to support the association’s Sign Language Interpretation Fund, helping to triple the number of sign language interpreters that serve the deaf community.

I’m not exactly the poster child for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Aside from the long, tied-back hair and subtle earring that project a superficial divergence from the norm, I appear to be the mainstream standard for privilege: straight, white, cisgender male from a socioeconomically stable upbringing. The assessment is on point: I am privileged. As such, it may come as a surprise that I am the one writing about DEI. So, before I share my current DEI work at Common Impact, let me share my story.
