Ross Professor: There's Something Terribly Wrong With How We Make Decisions About Climate Change

For over two decades, Joe Árvai has studied how we actually make choices — compared to how we think we make them. It will come as no surprise to even the most casual observers that the gulf between them can be large. In a recent study, Árvai and Douglas Bessette of Michigan State University found a clever way to measure this phenomenon. Motivated by the “ethical oil” debate in Canada, they designed a study that would allow drivers to view a menu of gasoline options from different countries.

Bacardi Receives First Certification in Puerto Rico from Wildlife Habitat Council for Conservation and Education Efforts

Bats are more than just an icon on a label for Bacardi. The company, synonymous with the world’s only flying mammal, stepped up its environmental stewardship efforts at the world’s largest premium rum distillery in Cataño, Puerto Rico to create a full-circle bat conservation campaign in 2018. The initiative was applauded during the annual WHC Conservation Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, where Bacardi demonstrated its commitment to environmental stewardship by securing the WHC Conservation Certification. This is the first WHC certification for a program in Puerto Rico and the second certification for a Bacardi facility, the first was for the program at Bacardi Bottling Corporation in Jacksonville, FL, which recently achieved re-certification.

This School is Serving as a Sustainable Safe Haven for 240 Girls in Ghana

Ghana's Volta region has the lowest quality education in the country, and lack of facilities means 87% of girls in primary school do not continue to secondary school. Tetra Tech partnered with Voices of African Mothers and Cornell University Sustainable Design’s Sustainable Education Ghana to give girls a safe and sustainable place to receive an education. The designer has just marked his 10th year in business and last year was named global creative director of Timberland. Under his new role, Raeburn will work with Timberland on footwear, apparel and accessories to bring his sustainability ethos into Timberland’s creative strategy and retail spaces.

North Carolina Schoolchildren Give Mohawk Group and Karastan a Hand in Sustainability

Rockingham County students in North Carolina recently joined Mohawk Group and Karastan to commemorate the installation of an on-campus SmartFlower™ solar energy unit with a collaborative hands-on art project facilitated by plant employees. On a canvas backdrop using eco-friendly paint, students from Morehead High School and Central Elementary School covered their hands in different colors and imprinted them around a message embodying Mohawk’s commitment to sustainability: “We Believe in Handprints Over Footprints.”
