Climate Institute and Home Depot Representatives Appointed to SCS-002 Standards Committee; Additional Opening in Producer Interest Category
(3BLMedia/theCSRfeed) Madison, WI - May 24, 2010 - Leonardo Academy welcomes John Topping to the Type III Life-Cycle Impact Profile Declarations for Materials, Products, Services and Systems (SCS-002) Standards Committee. Mr. Topping has been President and CEO of the Climate Institute based in Washington, DC since its founding in 1986. From 1989-1990 he served as editor of the portions of the IPCC First Assessment Report concerning impacts of climate change on human settlement, industry, transport, energy, human health and air quality, and on impacts of climate and UV interactions and as Lead Author of the portions concerning impacts on human settlement, industry and transport. Topping received a Certificate from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for contributing to the award of the Nobel Peace Prize of 2007 to the IPCC. Topping was the former Director of the Office of Air and Radiation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Reagan administration. He holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College and a J.D. from Yale University. He was appointed to the SCS-002 Standards Committee under the Environmentalist Category.
Leonardo Academy would also like to extend its appreciation to Stacy Moore of The Home Depot for volunteering to participate on the SCS-002 Standards Committee. Ms. Moore is a manager for Environmental Innovation at The Home Depot. She manages the Eco Options program and overall sustainability for the company. Responsibilities also include managing the content of the best in class Eco Options website (www.homedepot.com/ecooptions), managing the product qualification process, managing the in-store Green Team (over 1,400 members throughout the USA), and is Captain of the Earth Day campaign for the company.
Committee Opening
Applications are now being accepted for one vacancy on the SCS-002 Standards Committee, within the Producer Category. Any individual or representative of an organization that produces or supplies goods (including component or material manufacturer, utility company and industry association) is encouraged to apply.

About the Committee
The SCS-002 Standards Committee is working to develop a life-cycle assessment framework, calculation algorithms and standardized declaration format for assessing, quantifying and reporting the environmental performance of materials, products, services and systems. The SCS-002 standard will include frameworks for four dependent practices: Climate Metrics, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) and Management, Building Declarations and a National Type III Label. Leonardo Academy, a nonprofit organization that works to advance sustainability, is providing facilitation and process support for the standard development initiative, under the rules of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
The SCS-002 Committee consists of a skilled, diverse membership representing building owners, operators and developers; product designers and manufacturers; energy providers; telecommunications; architects; environmental consultants; certifiers; industry trade associations; and government representatives. Outreach efforts over the next several months will focus on engaging additional participation in the process from academia and research, environmental NGOs, consumer groups and other interested stakeholders.
