Each year, about two-thirds of our revenue is spent on materials and services needed to make our products. Whenever possible, we source from local suppliers near our facilities. This helps us shorten our supply chain and reduce risk. Proximity allows us to know our suppliers and ensure they produce our materials and render services responsibly, in addition to strengthening the local economy.
Domtar has been a centerpiece in some of our communities for more than a century. We depend on them, and they depend on us. The Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation today announced the opening of the application period for the 2018 Stephen J. Brady Stop Hunger Scholarships which will run from October 5 through December 5, 2017. KeyBank Community Development Lending & Investment (CDLI) has provided a total of $46 million in financing to Dominium for the new construction of North Range Crossing, a 216-unit affordable multifamily project in Commerce City, CO. KeyBank arranged for the affordable housing and development company a $32.8 million construction loan and a $13.1 million equity bridge loan using tax-exempt bonds issued by the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA) and an allocation of 4% LIHTC credits.
Congress is back from its August recess and will debate budget appropriations for fiscal year 2018 in the coming months. Thankfully, both the Senate and House Appropriations committees have approved maintaining funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that runs AmeriCorps and Senior Corps, and funds other national service programs. Many corporate citizenship programs involve initiatives that reflect immediate problems (such as apprenticeship programs to fill near-term openings), the nature of their company (such as financial literacy), or local community needs (arts, athletics, etc.). In addition, though, some business leaders and corporations are addressing a social goal that is outside their business expertise and far beyond next year’s workforce projections.
