I was recently invited to attend a forum hosted by Dell and The Atlantic – a magazine covering a wide array of subjects, including business, culture and technology. The event, Cracking the Code: The Next Generation of Women in STEM, invited an audience, ranging from chief technology officers to storybook authors, to discuss one of the most pressing issues of our time: How do we engage the next generation of girls and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics? Much of the dialogue encompassing the event connected me to many thoughts on the ways we can engage young girls in STEM.

Dr. Eoin King is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Acoustics at the University of Hartford. King is well known through the industry for having developed novel environmental noise assessment techniques, with a particular focus on strategic noise mapping. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering of the USA (INCE-USA) and is Managing Editor for the publication Noise/News International. Today, 90% of the company’s frozen finfish and 100% of canned tuna purchases meet the Seafood Watch recommendations and by the end of 2018, the company expects to have transitioned all salmon and shrimp products to Seafood Watch “Best Choice” and “Good Alternative” categories.

20 Years on 14% of Wild Seafood Engaged With the MSC Program

International non-profit, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), has released its 20th anniversary annual report. Over the last two decades the MSC has worked with scientists, NGOs and the seafood industry to set a globally recognised benchmark for sustainable fishing. Those organisations that meet the MSC’s standards for sustainability and traceability can then use the blue MSC label on seafood products.

Points of Light will award five Daily Point of Light Awards to volunteers who performed outstanding work in their communities following the devastation of recent hurricanes. The volunteers will be recognized on Oct. 21 during the “Deep From the Heart: The One America Appeal” concert benefitting communities hit by recent natural disasters. The volunteers will be recognized on stage with the five living former U.S. presidents, including Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.

South Florida Resident Uses Tech Skills to Support Harvey, Irma Relief Efforts

After Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, Leah Halbina reached out to friends in the Houston area to see how she could help. When she found out about Sketch City, an open, nonprofit community of technology advocates and civic hackers that used technology to organize rescue efforts, help victims locate their nearest shelter and satisfy other pressing needs, she jumped in to help. Shortly after, Leah had to use the same technology in her home state of Florida as Hurricane Irma approached and made landfall.

Habitat for Humanity to Aid More Than 6,000 Families in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico in Long-Term Housing Recovery

Habitat for Humanity is commencing the long-term phase of its Habitat Hammers Back hurricane recovery initiative, pledging to help more than 6,000 families across regions impacted by hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

The nonprofit housing leader is seeking to raise $100 million to support the repair, rebuilding and new construction of homes to assist low- and moderate-income families in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.
