On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the major hostilities of World War I formally ended. This historic date has been memorialized around the world. Whether recognized as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day or Veterans Day, Nov. 11 serves as a solemn reminder.

Young people will always find ways to employ their time. With more than 3.5 billion of them under the age of 30, it’s imperative that their employment is with purpose and value. Yet today, an astonishing 71 million young people around the world are left wanting for that.

This is the latest in a series of triumphs for global efforts to combat infectious diseases. In December, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reported a 99 percent reduction in annual polio cases since 1988. Between 2000 and 2016, the WHO estimates that new HIV infections fell 39 percent and, although still a leading cause of death worldwide, tuberculosis claimed 53 million fewer lives due to better diagnosis and treatment.
