Environment: Building a More Sustainable Future

For Bacardi, environmental sustainability is good business – an approach that dates to the very beginning of the company more than 158 years ago. When Bacardi founder Don Facundo Bacardí Massó started his business in 1862, he accepted the Spanish government’s challenge to reduce surplus amounts of molasses in Cuba, leading to the crafting of BACARDÍ® rum. Repurposing old whisky barrels to age his rum was also part of his original plan, a practice still in use today. Our environmental sustainability commitment has grown over seven generations and our vision is to be the world's most environmentally responsible spirits company. Our focus areas for building a more sustainable future include water, climate change, and waste. As the first global spirits company to pledge against single-use plastic straws in March 2016, we continue our efforts to find more ways to remove non-essential, non-recyclable single-use plastic waste and are currently reviewing opportunities across our supply chain.

Celebrate National Tequila Day by Learning How the Industry Is Becoming Sustainable
Plant-based resources often seem infinite until they are suddenly depleted, and because tequila comes from the agave plant - specifically the blue agave - it’s imperative to keep stocks maintained to ensure plentiful supply in the future. But part of maintaining these crops means being mindful of other components of sustainability: energy use, repurposing, and waste. For Patrón Tequila, this means overhauling their existing systems to be more environmentally friendly.

Since its inception, Tequila Cazadores, which is known for using only blue agave, has always kept sustainability as a top priority. Today, the distillery houses a biomass boiler, making it 100 percent biomass fueled—60 percent of the biofuel is used to produce the tequila and comes from spent agave fibers, which equates to about 11,000 tons a year. The other 40 percent comprises roughly 8,000 tons of carbon-neutral, renewable fuel sources like clean waste wood, biomass briquettes, sawdust, coconut shells and tree cuttings.
